Freelancers Work Smarter As Country Lays Off More 9-to-5ers

As our country's economy continues to sink, more and more people are turning to the web as a way to make extra money... or make ANY money.

I've always believed this to be true, but felt particularly justified in light of a BusinessWeek article written by Arik Hesseldahl that came across my desk today. Arik tells us that, despite a slowing economy, the tech industry is booming.

In fact, Arik says, " There's still a labor shortage in tech. And if you took Economics 101, you know that's good news for paychecks. Already, tech wages are 87% higher, on average, than in the rest of the private-sector job market. Tech wages are also growing faster, by an average of 4% a year -- double the 2% reported for private industry as a whole. And in Austin, San Diego, and Sacramento, Calif., tech salaries tend to be twice what they are for private-sector jobs generally." He continues, "More than 850,000 IT jobs will be added during the 10-year period ending in 2016, which would be a rise of 24%. Add all the jobs that will replace retiring workers, and the total increase could be a tidy 1.6 million. That means one job in every 19 created over the course of the next decade will be in technology."

Think about it. All those technology jobs are creating lots of need for copywriters. It gives me chills to think about it! The truth is, designers aren't writers, anymore than writers are designers. What an incredible opportunity to work together!

There is no greater time to be a freelancer, particularly a freelance copywriter, than right NOW. If you're thinking about but don't know how to get started, contact me. If you're already doing it, but not getting far as fast as you would like, you can contact me too. And if you're doing really well and are interested in overflow job sharing, I'd love to talk to you.

People, there's plenty of work out there for everyone, and it's virtually recession-proof.
